e-CAP is a e-waste Collection and Awareness Program. Started in 2013, the program is an initiative by TES-AMM, IWMA, CII YI and Report Bee. The aim of the program is to collect e-waste from schools and thereby spread awareness about e-waste among the young e-waste contributors of the society. In its first year the program, collected over 500 kgs of e-waste from just 4 schools. This year, the aim of the program is to reach 100 schools in Chennai and collect 12 to 15 tonnes of e-waste.
Chinmaya Vidyalaya Virugambakkam School took an initiative in this regard and set out on a rally on 28th January 2015 with the students of Balasevak program, health and wellness club and Karuna club from classes VI – IX to create awareness around our neighbourhood. The E-Waste collected by our school from the students and also the discarded computers of our school were taken by the e-CAP team on 5th February 2015. The award ceremony for the year 2014-2015 was held at Central Lecture Theatre, IITM, Chennai on 11th February 2015 (Wednesday). The top schools who contributed the maximum kilograms of E-Waste were awarded in the function. Ms.Andie DeArment, Cultural Affairs Specialist, Public Affairs Section, U.S. Consulate General was the chief guest of the day. We received the award from Mr.Arun Krishnamurthy environmental activist, EFI, Chennai for the 2nd highest contributor school (700 kgs) of E-waste in e-CAP 2K14 among 43 participating schools from Chennai. Chinmaya Vidyalaya Virugambakkkam bagged a cheque for Rs.7500/- and the school coordinator Mrs.Vidya .R received a cheque for Rs.2500/- for the same and also awarded with mementoes. This motivated students to collect more and more E-Waste in the years to come in order to make Chennai a clean and green city. | ||||
